LASA Choir - TMEA Region
LASA Choir students auditioned for the TMEA Region Choir on Saturday, October 8th at Bowie High School. Congratulations to the following students for making Region Choir.
Raptor Varsity Tennis wins District!
Congratulation the Raptor Varsity Tennis students as they are officially the District 24-5A Champions! They took on McCallum last week and won an easy 10-1. UIL State Playoffs start on Monday 10/10, and they will take on Pflugerville Connally at 9am. If they defeat Connally, they will go up against the winner of Belton/A&M Consolidated on Thursday 10/13. If they survive that, the following things are on the horizon:
LASA Raptors Girls Basketball!
Open Gym every Tuesday and Thursday in the Small Gym starting at 4:00. If you are planning to play or tryout, come join us the next couple of weeks to get an early start! Meet and Greet on Tuesday, September 27 th and October 4 th from 4:00-5:00 PM in the Small Gym. 28 LASA HS Seniors Named 2023 National Merit Semifinalists
The Liberal Arts and Science is proud to announce the names of its 28 semifinalists in the 2022-23 National Merit Scholarship Program. Nationally, approximately 16,000 students were chosen to continue in the 68th annual competition for 7,250 Merit Scholarships worth about $28 million that will be offered next spring. To become finalists, a student must have an outstanding high school academic record, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and submit SAT scores that confirm his/her earlier qualifying test performance. Finalists will be announced in February 2023. Congratulations, Seniors!
National Merit Commended Students 2023
Congratulations to the 81 members of the LASA Class of 2023 who were recognized as Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program!
Junior, Max Rodriguez, participates in Encampment for Citizenship
If you are interested in social justice, take a look at what Junior, Max Rodriguez did this summer. Max applied and was selected to participate in the Encampment for Citizenship this summer, which is a 75-year-old social justice program. This year it was held at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA. It was a 3.5 week "immersion experience in participatory democracy . . . where young people (ages 15-18) who would otherwise never meet, form a self-governing community, learn to think critically about pressing social and political issues that affect their communities and our world as a whole, and take action."
LASA Junior, Sanwi Sarode, publishes book!
Junior, Sanwi Sarode, made the most of her time at home during the pandemic by writing a novel. Her book, Luminance, was just published!
Ruby Sulter, LASA Senior, Launches Summer Solstice Line
"In B.D.F.O., Ruby Sutler has created a movement." Congratulations to Ruby Sulter, who launched her Summer Solstice line with a community event and fashion show. Check out the article in Austin Woman magazine.
LASA Senior, Henrik Chan, wins Bronze at IPF Subjunior World Championships in Turkey for Bench Press
LASA senior, Henrik Chan, competed at the IPF Subjunior World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey on 9/4. The IPF is the biggest powerlifting federation. In June, Henrik was selected as part of the USA team for the World competition. The competition goes through the squat, bench, and deadlift, with competitors trying to do the most weight possible in each of those categories. At the World Championships competition, Henrik received a bronze medal in the bench press and also a bronze for the team rankings. WTG, Henrik!

Golf Update
For students taking golf for their PE credit, we will meet after school 4:00-5:00 in the room attached to the large gym on Mondays and Wednesdays. For students interested in being a part of the golf team, we will meet on Thursdays after school. Our first meeting will be on Thursday September 1st 4:00-5:00, and our location is to be determined. Students interested in the golf team should email me at david.lester@austinisd.org
