LASA Summer Homework/Reading, New to LASA Book Club and Book Recs for Parents

LASA Summer Homework/Reading

Does LASA have Summer Homework and/or Required Reading?

We get this question every year and want to make sure that you know the answer:

NO! LASA does not have any summer homework and/or reading assignments. We believe strongly that kids should do other things in the summer - things they want to do, pursue, etc. and we believe they should read things they want to read for fun.

New to LASA Summer Book Club - OPTIONAL

Legendborn

This will be the third year that LASA has hosted a Summer Book Club for incoming students: we'll be reading Legendborn by Tracy Deonn.. This book club is completely optional but we hope you'll decide to join us in reading this award-winning Arthurian legend that features a remarkable main character. Then come to one of our on-campus meetings where we'll chat about the book, meet other new students (plus some awesome returning students who will be Literary Leaders), and finish up with popsicles. It's a fun way to get used to the campus and meet some new friends!  Parents: if you'd like to stay on campus, we will have current LASA parents hosting an informal meet & greet at the same time.

Signup here to reserve your spot (and it will send you a reminder two days in advance!): https://lasa.austinschools.org/school/signups

If you are a member of Austin Urban Scholars at Kealing then you can pick up a copy of the book from Ms. Tenorio before school lets out. If you are a member of Breakthrough, then you'll receive a copy of the book when you start summer camp.

Book Recommendations

Looking for some book recommendations on parenting the gifted student, Time management/organization or even college planning? We compiled a list of books that while not "endorsed" by LASA, they have often been mentioned in trainings, meetings, professional development, and parent talks. Many of these have been recommended by LASA Admin and counselors. They are linked here in one spot to make it easier for viewing and shopping at Austin's local book store, Book People.
