LASA Raptors Team Tennis team made history this week by defeating Friendswood High School in an exciting finals match to become the Regional Champs. This marks the first time the LASA Tennis team has qualified for the State Team Tennis tournament! They are heading to State next week.
Here’s the full scoop…
With Senior captains Karly Shi and Ted Gershon leading the way, the Raptors took on Richmond Foster and Friendswood High school in a nail biting 2-day tournament. After breathtakingly close doubles matches against Richmond, LASA was down 3-4 but they did not let this discourage them and refused to lose on Coach V's and Freshman Claire Zhou's birthdays. Juniors Wendy Geng and Milo Kevorkian came through with big singles wins in a super tiebreaker, with Milo finishing it off as LASA ran onto his court.
Feeling extra confident heading into the next day's matches against Friendswood, the team was quickly shaken awake after losing the first few doubles matches. Down but not out, and a couple injuries later, the teams moved on to singles matches. Claire played early and easily dominated her opponent. Watch out future tennis, she is only a freshman and getting better every day. Junior Sanwi Sarode headed to her court only to start experiencing a severe muscle spasm in her abdomen. UIL trainer treated her and she was cleared to play, but she could only serve underhand due to the injury. In a miraculous comeback in a super tiebreaker, she beat her opponent. All eyes turned to Sophomore Sophia Porter in what would be the last completed match of the day. Silence filled the Friendswood crowd (which was a noticeable difference from earlier in the day) as they knew it was almost over for them. After Sophia won the championship point, both students and LASA spectators flooded the court to celebrate: LASA is heading to State!
