Junior, Max Rodriguez, participates in Encampment for Citizenship

If you are interested in social justice, take a look at what Junior, Max Rodriguez did this summer. Max applied and was selected to participate in the Encampment for Citizenship this summer, which is a 75-year-old social justice program. This year it was held at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA. It was a 3.5 week "immersion experience in participatory democracy . . . where young people (ages 15-18) who would otherwise never meet, form a self-governing community, learn to think critically about pressing social and political issues that affect their communities and our world as a whole, and take action."

You can watch Max paddle in a traditional tomol with a member of the Chumash tribe in this video:

Transcript

Six men with hats on paddling in a long wooden boat on a sunny day. Passing ducks and other sail boats. As they paddle they are in sync from either left to right paddling. A quiet and soothing atmosphere.
