Karime Cavazos

Activity Accounts Bookkeeper

Room: Front Office

Born in McAllen, Texas, but raised deep in Southern Arkansas. I moved to Austin around 2007 and never looked back.

After running my own business for about eight years, I came to Austin ISD in 2021 as the LASA security monitor. Still, I quickly realized I was not ready to let go of my passion for the Beauty Industry and decided to resign from my position at LASA. Fast forward two years later. I had the opportunity to come back to LASA as the New Activity Accounts Bookkeeper/ Librarian Clerk and have been here since October of 2023.

In my free time, I love to paddle board, spend time with my sassy six-year-old daughter, and take runs with my Doodles (Cali & Dex).

Cindy Dwinells

Registrar

Room:

I am the Registrar at LASA. Prior to working for AISD, I spent 12 years as a Registrar in higher education. I love being a part of a student's educational path and watching their hard earned credits grow from their freshman to senior year. But the best part is handing them their high school diploma as they walk across the stage for the final time.

I have lived in South Austin since 2000 previously having lived in California, New Mexico, Colorado and Washington State. My son, daughter in law and two grandsons live in San Francisco, CA and my daughter, son in law and two granddaughters live in Keller, TX.

I enjoy spending time with my family and taking long unplanned road trips. Oh, and a fun fact is that in 1967 my family was featured in a full page Maytag washing machine advertisement in Life Magazine!!!!

Karen Foree

Bookkeeper (finances, not textbooks!)

Room:

I started working with LASA in 2007 when my oldest was a Sophomore. I edited the Lots of LASA newsletter for the first several years. I thought I was joking the first year when I told the principal it would be easier if I worked on campus... And then he offered me a job :) My two students graduated LASA in 2010 & 2012 -- and I am still here!

I spent 2 years as Guidance Secretary/Receptionist, 4 years as Principal's Secretary and this starts my 8th year as a bookkeeper!

When I am not wrangling the budget and purchasing supplies, I love to run away to the mountains. I'm not even very picky about which mountains... Hiking beautiful wooded trails, reading or knitting on the front porch and watching the deer, birds and occasional woodchuck wander by is my idea of the perfect vacation.

Jo Koerth

Principal's Secretary

Room:

Born Josefin Lundgren in Stockholm, Sweden, Ms. Koerth graduated from Stockholm University with a Bachelor's Degree in English (focus on Literature) and one in Cinema Studies.

In Sweden, her career was in film and television. She worked mainly as a 2nd AD/Extras Coordinator on crime dramas (Sweden's main export!) such as Arne Dahl, 100 Code, and Modus.

She once shared an office with Dominic Monaghan of Lost and Lord of the Rings fame. (Where she proceeded to pronounce his name wrong for an entire work day before he gently corrected her.)

In 2014, she married the love of her life (the other Ms. Koerth!) and started the immigration process to move to the US.

In December of 2015, she finally received her entry visa and was able to move to Austin, TX.

Her first job in the US was technically a call center where she worked as a "legal advisor" and settled a couple of cases out of court for $12.50/hr.

Her second U.S. job was as the library clerk at LASA. From there, she moved into the LASA main office as the new receptionist, and then finally to her current position as Principal's Secretary.

She lives with her wife, a dog (Bear), and too many cats (Danny, Mr. Darcy, and Bucky).

Monique Redfield

Receptionist

Room:

I am originally from New Hampshire. I went to high school and college in Oregon (Bend and Corvallis, Oregon State University) where I got my BA in Philosophy.

I have lived in Austin for eleven years and have two children, one at LASA and a younger son.

Before coming to LASA, I was a prekindergarten teacher at a private preschool.

Being a part of shaping the young minds has been something of a passion for me and I always aspire to be working in some form of education. I love being in a learning environment.

Elizabeth Switek

Librarian

Room:

Elizabeth Switek became the LBJ/LASA librarian in March 2020 after being the librarian at Austin Discovery School for the past fifteen years. Ms. Switek has a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College in Geology with a concentration in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology and a MS from the University of Minnesota in Archaeological Geology where she concentrated in the provenance of ceramics using microscopic and nuclear analysis. After moving to Texas and working in the field of cultural resource management she decided to go to library school at UT-Austin where her MLIS was in archives and records management. After working as the Lloyd Bentsen Archivist at UT and at SEMATECH, she had children and decided that she wanted to be working with students to help them develop the same inquisitive spirit that has always driven her. So she went back to UT to get her school certification. She’s now decided that’s enough school!

Ms. Switek is a proud mom of two LASA graduates and lives with her husband, epileptic chihuahua, an aloof cat, and four free-range chickens. She enjoys reading, running, gardening, knitting, cooking, and watching unenlightened tv. She was a globe-trotting Air Force brat and still loves to travel, particularly to Asia.
